Mounted near the compressor, this fan forces air over the condenser so it can reject heat. When the motor seizes, the compressor runs continuously against rising pressures, the discharge line gets scalding hot, and cooling falls away. It is a comparatively cheap part, and it is worth cleaning the coils at the same time since both jobs live in the same space.
