A megohmmeter applies a high test voltage to measure insulation quality, revealing leakage paths an ordinary multimeter misses. The classic case is a dishwasher or dryer heating element that has cracked: cold it tests perfectly, but once hot it leaks current to ground and trips the breaker mid-cycle. An insulation test finds that fault where a continuity check says everything is fine.
