⚠️ BEFORE YOU START

Unplug the fridge. If the back panel is iced over, melt it patiently with a hair dryer on low from a distance — prying an iced panel cracks it, and stabbing at ice can puncture the evaporator, which totals the fridge.

Tools

  • Nut driver set
  • Phone camera
  • Hair dryer (if iced)
  • Cooler for the food

Parts

  • Evaporator fan motor (or motor + blade) for your model

Step by step

  1. 1 Confirm the fan

Chirping/squealing from the freezer that stops when you open the door, or a silent freezer with a running compressor, points here. Empty the freezer into a cooler.

  2. 2 Remove the freezer back panel

Take out shelves and ice maker parts as needed, then the screws around the interior back panel. If it resists, it’s frozen to the evaporator — hair dryer, patience.

🔧 Hand-off point: Heavy ice behind this panel means a defrost failure is the real problem — a fan swap alone won’t hold. This is a sensible hand-off point. find a refrigerator repair pro near you →
  3. 3 Photograph and free the fan

The fan sits above or beside the evaporator coil in a shroud. Photo the wiring and mounting, unplug the connector, and unclip the motor.

  4. 4 Transfer the blade carefully

If the new motor ships bare, pull the blade off the old shaft (straight pull, no twisting) and press it onto the new one to the same depth.

  5. 5 Reassemble and listen

Mount, plug in, panel back on, food back in. The fan should spin up smooth and quiet once the compartment closes (many fans stop while doors are open — normal).

🔧 WHEN TO CALL A PRO

Between the icing questions, panel gymnastics, and the puncture risk, this is the fridge DIY with the most ways to go sideways — no shame in booking it, especially on a french-door where the panel access is tight. If you'd rather skip it entirely, find a refrigerator repair pro near you →
