What is a sump?
The recessed well in the bottom of a dishwasher tub where water collects, holding the filter, heater and pumps.
Everything happens in the sump. Water collects there between sprays, the filter sits in it, the heating element or flow through heater is plumbed into it, and both pumps draw from it. It is also where glass shards, fruit stickers and bones end up, which is why a grinding noise or a drain failure so often ends with a torch pointed into the sump.
