What is a sump?

Everything happens in the sump: water collects there between sprays, the filter sits in it, the heating element or flow-through heater is plumbed into it, and both pumps draw from it. It is also where glass shards, fruit stickers and bones end up, which is why a grinding noise or a drain failure so often ends with a torch pointed into the sump.
