What you saveFree — and prevents the arcing that destroys magnetrons
⚠️ BEFORE YOU START

Never use abrasive pads, scouring powder or oven cleaner inside a microwave — they damage the cavity coating and expose bare metal, which then arcs. Never remove the outer metal cabinet of a microwave. The high-voltage capacitor inside stores a charge that can kill you, and it holds that charge after the unit is unplugged. Every step in this guide stays outside the cabinet or inside the cooking cavity — if a repair needs the case off, it is a job for a technician.

Tools

  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • White vinegar or lemon
  • Mild detergent

Parts

  • None

Step by step

  1. 1 Steam the cavity loose

Put a microwave-safe bowl with a cup of water and a few tablespoons of white vinegar (or a halved lemon) inside. Run it for four to five minutes until it boils and steams up the cavity, then leave the door shut for five more minutes.

  2. 2 Unplug it before you scrub

Once the steam has done its work, pull the plug. You will be wiping around the door switches and the waveguide cover, and it should not be live.

  3. 3 Remove the plate and ring

Wash both in the sink like ordinary dishes. Most glass plates are dishwasher-safe.

  4. 4 Wipe the cavity down

The softened residue should come off with a cloth and mild detergent. Do the roof as well — it is where splatter collects and where people never look.

  5. 5 Clean the waveguide cover gently

Wipe it, do not scrub it. If it is charred, blistered or holed, replace it rather than cleaning it — that damage is what causes arcing.

  6. 6 Clean the door seal area

Wipe the flat sealing surface around the door and the matching face on the microwave. Food residue there stops the door seating properly against its switches.

  7. 7 Dry and reassemble

Dry everything, refit the ring and plate, and plug it back in.

Rental-grade over-the-range units are worth repairing for anything under about $150 because replacement includes an installation. Above that the landlord maths usually favours a new unit.

🔧 WHEN TO CALL A PRO

If you find rust that has eaten through the cavity wall, or paint damage exposing bare metal that keeps arcing after touch-up, the microwave has reached the end of its life. A cavity that cannot contain the energy safely is not repairable in any economic sense. If you'd rather skip it entirely, find a microwave repair pro near you →
