What causes it, and what each fix costs
Door interlock switches
Three switches confirm the door is shut before the unit will run. One failed switch is the single most common microwave fault, and it usually kills power completely.
Magnetron
The tube that actually generates the microwaves. When it fails, the unit runs, lights, and turns, but nothing gets hot.
High voltage diode or capacitor
Feeds the magnetron. A failed diode gives you a loud hum and no heat, and often takes the fuse with it.
Turntable motor
Small synchronous motor under the cavity floor. Cheap, and the plate simply stops rotating.
Control board or touch panel
Unresponsive keys or a dead display. On over the range units the panel takes heat and steam from the cooktop below.
Vent fan or grease filter (over the range)
The exhaust side of an OTR unit. Filters are a five minute owner job. The blower motor is not.
Repair or replace?
Microwaves have the harshest repair or replace math of any appliance in the kitchen, and it depends entirely on which kind you own. A countertop microwave costs $80 to $200 new, almost no paid repair makes financial sense, and a service call alone can exceed the replacement price. An over the range unit costs $250 to $600 installed and is genuinely worth repairing for most faults. A built in, drawer or speed oven model costs $1,000 to $3,000 and is worth repairing almost every time. Be honest with yourself about which category you are in before booking anyone.

Why is microwave repair almost always a professional job?
The high voltage capacitor inside a microwave stores a charge that can be lethal, and it holds that charge after the unit is unplugged, sometimes for a long time. It has to be safely discharged before anything inside the cabinet is touched. External items like filters, the light bulb, the turntable plate and the waveguide cover are fine to handle yourself. Anything behind the metal cabinet is not.
Is a microwave that sparks dangerous?
Stop using it. Arcing is usually a burned waveguide cover, food residue, or metal in the cavity, often cheap to fix, but running it while it arcs can damage the magnetron and, in the worst case, start a fire.
How long should a microwave last?
Seven to ten years for a typical household. Over the range units often go first because they live in heat and grease from the cooktop below.
Is it worth repairing a $120 countertop microwave?
Almost never, and any honest technician will tell you so before charging a diagnostic fee. Spend the money on a new one and keep the old one for parts only if you are the sort of person who does that.
