Microwave Sparking or Arcing Repair Cost
Visible sparks, flashes or a crackling noise inside the cavity while it runs.
National averages for independent repair companies. Service-call/diagnostic fees ($75โ$150) are usually applied toward the repair. Costs vary by brand, model, and city.
What causes it โ and what each fix costs
Burned or damaged waveguide cover
The small mica panel on the cavity wall. It absorbs grease, chars, and then arcs. The most common cause by a wide margin, and a few dollars to fix.
Metal in the cavity
Foil, a metal-trimmed dish, a twist tie, or a rack touching the wall. Costs nothing โ just remove it.
Food residue baked onto the cavity walls
Carbonised splatter conducts and arcs. A thorough clean solves it.
Damaged cavity paint exposing bare metal
Rust or chipped paint inside the cavity can arc. Microwave-safe cavity paint helps early; a rusted-through cavity ends the appliance.
Failing magnetron antenna
Less common, and the expensive version of this fault โ usually after arcing has been left unrepaired for a while.
Repair or replace?
Stop using the microwave until you have found the cause. The overwhelming majority of arcing is a $5โ$20 waveguide cover or a cleaning job, both of which anyone can do. What makes arcing expensive is ignoring it: sustained arcing damages the magnetron, and a $15 repair becomes a $300 one or a new appliance.

We'll quote you on hauling it away โ or buying it.
Not every microwave is worth repairing, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a repair. If you're replacing it, we'll give you a free quote either way: scrap pickup for a machine that's finished, or a cash offer if it still has life in it. Working units, recent models and premium brands are often worth real money.
Common questions
Is a sparking microwave dangerous?
It can be. Arcing can ignite grease or the waveguide cover itself. Stop using it, unplug it, and find the cause before running it again.
What is the waveguide cover?
The thin mica or plastic panel on the inside wall or roof of the cavity. It lets microwave energy through while keeping food splatter out of the waveguide. It is a wear item, and it is meant to be replaced.
Can I run the microwave with the waveguide cover removed?
No. Without it, food splatter gets into the waveguide and damages the magnetron directly. Replace it before using the unit again.
