What causes it, and what each fix costs
Burned or damaged waveguide cover
The small mica panel on the cavity wall. It absorbs grease, chars, and then arcs. The most common cause by a wide margin, and a few dollars to fix.
Metal in the cavity
Foil, a metal trimmed dish, a twist tie, or a rack touching the wall. Costs nothing, just remove it.
Food residue baked onto the cavity walls
Carbonised splatter conducts and arcs. A thorough clean solves it.
Damaged cavity paint exposing bare metal
Rust or chipped paint inside the cavity can arc. Microwave safe cavity paint helps early. A rusted through cavity ends the appliance.
Failing magnetron antenna
Less common, and the expensive version of this fault, usually after arcing has been left unrepaired for a while.
