⚠️ BEFORE YOU START

Unplug the dryer. The drum is light but awkward — clear floor space before you pull it.

Tools

  • Putty knife
  • Nut driver
  • Phone camera

Parts

  • Drum belt for your model
  • Optional: idler pulley and rollers (maintenance kit) while you’re in there

Step by step

  1. 1 Open the cabinet

Most dryers: pop the lint screen screws, release the top with a putty knife under the front corners, then unscrew the front panel (unplug the door switch wires — photo first).

  2. 2 Note the belt path

Before touching anything, photograph how the old belt (or its remains) routes around the motor pulley and spring-loaded idler — ribs against the drum.

  3. 3 Remove the drum

Release belt tension at the idler, slip the belt off the motor pulley, and lift the drum out the front.

  4. 4 Fit the new belt and consider the kit

Loop the new belt around the drum in the old one’s wear line. If the rollers are flat-spotted or the idler squeals when spun, replace them now — the labor is identical and the parts are cheap.

  5. 5 Thread the tricky part

Set the drum back on its supports, then reach under it to route the belt: over the idler, around the motor pulley, exactly as your photo shows. Rotate the drum by hand two full turns to confirm the belt tracks straight.

  6. 6 Reassemble and test

Front panel, door switch wires, top, lint screen — then run it empty and listen for smooth, quiet rotation.

🔧 WHEN TO CALL A PRO

If the motor doesn’t hum at all (so the belt was never the issue) or the new belt squeals under load, the motor or idler spring needs a diagnosis — quick for a pro, expensive to guess at. If you'd rather skip it entirely, find a dryer repair pro near you →
