What causes it — and what each fix costs
Worn or snapped drive belt
A thin ribbon belt wraps the whole drum; 10–15 years is a normal life. The belt threads around a motor pulley and a spring-loaded idler — the fiddly part of the job.
Broken idler pulley
The tensioner wheel seizes or squeals before it fails, often taking the belt with it. Replace both together.
Motor or start switch
If the motor won’t hum at all, the problem is upstream — door switch, thermal fuse, or the motor itself.
