⚠️ BEFORE YOU START

This is a GAS appliance repair. Unplug the range AND close its gas shutoff valve before starting. Never touch the new igniter’s grey element with bare fingers — skin oils shorten its life. If any step feels unclear, this is a very reasonable repair to hand to a pro.

Tools

  • Nut driver
  • Small socket set
  • Wire connectors (usually included with part)

Parts

  • Igniter for your model — round or flat style, they are not interchangeable

Step by step

  1. 1 Cut power and gas

Unplug the range and turn the gas shutoff (behind the range or in the cabinet) perpendicular to the pipe. Confirm the cooktop won’t light.

  2. 2 Expose the burner tube

Remove the oven racks and the flat floor panel (a few screws) — the burner tube and its glow-bar igniter sit beneath.

  3. 3 Unbolt the old igniter

Two small screws hold it to the burner bracket. Follow its wires to the connector block or splice point.

🔧 Hand-off point: If your model’s wiring is spliced (no connector plug), you’ll be cutting wires and joining with ceramic wire nuts — a fine job for confident hands, a fair hand-off point otherwise. find a oven & range repair pro near you →
  4. 4 Connect the new igniter

Plug or splice per the part’s instructions, handling the element only by its ceramic base. Mount it in the identical bracket position beside the burner tube.

  5. 5 Restore and test

Reassemble the floor panel, open the gas valve, plug in, and set a bake: glow within 30 seconds, flame within about 60. Watch the first full ignition with the door open.

Whirlpool WFE535S0JZ notes & error codes

Measure the sensor at room temperature on any F3 code — about 1,080 ohms is the target. A sensor reading correctly points at the harness or control instead, which saves ordering the wrong part.

CodeWhat it means
F2E1 Runaway oven temperature
F3E0 Oven temperature sensor open
F3E1 Oven sensor shorted
F5E1 Door lock switch fault
F9E0 Door latch cannot reach unlocked position
