What is a scale?

Scale builds wherever hard water is heated or forced through a restriction. On an inlet valve it blocks the fine mesh screen until fill times stretch out and the machine reports a supply fault. On a heating element it acts as insulation, making the element run hotter than designed and shortening its life. Cleaning a scaled screen is often the entire repair on a slow-fill complaint — check it before condemning the valve.
