What is a stator?

In a direct-drive washer the motor has two halves: the stator, which is bolted to the back of the tub and does not move, and the rotor, which is attached to the drum and spins. The stator is a ring of copper windings that the control board energises in sequence to pull the rotor around. On most LG and Samsung machines the rotor position sensor is built into the stator assembly rather than sold separately, which is why a "hall sensor" fault often means ordering the whole stator. A failed stator usually shows up as a locked-motor error, a drum that will not turn, or visible burning on the windings.
