What causes it — and what each fix costs
Shift actuator (modern top-loaders)
The small actuator that shifts between agitate and spin is the #1 spin failure on newer Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana top-loaders. The part is cheap.
Drive belt worn or thrown
Belt-drive machines slip or stop spinning under load when the belt stretches. Quick fix.
Door lock / lid switch fault
If the machine can’t confirm the lid is locked it will agitate but refuse to spin.
Clutch or drive block (older top-loaders)
Classic direct-drive Whirlpool/Kenmore machines wear the clutch; drum spins weakly or smells like burning.
Motor or motor control board
Least common and most expensive. Diagnose everything else first.
Repair or replace?
Repair unless the quote crosses ~$400 on a machine over 8 years old. Actuators, belts, and switches are all economical; a motor control board on an aging builder-grade machine is where replacement starts to win.
