⚠️ BEFORE YOU START

Unplug the dryer. Label or photograph every wire — several thermostats look identical but live in different circuits.

Tools

  • Nut driver
  • Multimeter
  • Phone camera

Parts

  • Cycling thermostat and/or high-limit thermostat for your model (often sold as a kit with the thermal fuse)

Step by step

  1. 1 Know which one you’re hunting

Lukewarm air or endless drying → cycling thermostat. Scorching heat → cycling stat stuck closed. Repeated thermal fuse deaths → high-limit weak plus airflow. All live on the blower housing and heater can.

  2. 2 Open the service panel

Lower front or rear panel exposes the blower and heat path; the thermostats are the small round discs with two spade terminals.

  3. 3 Test each disc

At room temperature, cycling and hi-limit stats should read closed (continuity). Open at room temp = failed. Replace suspects — at $10–$25 each, replacing the set is standard practice.

  4. 4 Swap and rewire

One or two screws each; transfer wires per your photos. Torque snug — a loose thermostat reads air temp, not duct temp.

  5. 5 Test with real heat

Run a timed high-heat cycle: heat should cycle on and off every few minutes rather than running continuously or never arriving.

🔧 WHEN TO CALL A PRO

If temps are still wrong with new thermostats, the airflow path or the element itself is the driver — see the vent and element guides, or have a pro chase it with a thermometer in one visit. If you'd rather skip it entirely, find a dryer repair pro near you →
