Clothes come out scorching, the cabinet top is too hot to touch, a burnt smell lingers, or the dryer trips its thermal fuse repeatedly. Treat overheating as urgent — it’s the fire-risk symptom, and the causes are cheap to fix.

What causes it — and what each fix costs
Restricted vent (again)
Trapped hot air cooks the drum. The overwhelming #1 cause — clean the full vent run before replacing any part.
Cycling thermostat stuck closed
The thermostat that’s supposed to switch the heat off at temperature welds shut, so the element never rests.
Heating element grounded/shorted
A sagging coil touches the housing and heats continuously — even with the dial off. Unplug the dryer until repaired.
Blocked internal ducting or lint screen seat
Lint packs the internal duct below the screen; airflow dies, temps spike.
Felt drum seal gap

Repair or replace?
Repair immediately — and don’t run it unattended until fixed. Every overheating cause is an inexpensive part or a cleaning; the risk of ignoring it is the only expensive thing here.
