Wrong temperatures in either direction: lukewarm air and endless drying (cycling thermostat failed open/weak), or scorching heat (stuck closed). Dryers carry two to four disc thermostats — cycling, high-limit, and sometimes a separate operating stat per heat level — all cheap and all on accessible panels.

Cycling thermostat
Regulates normal drum temperature by switching the heat on and off. The usual suspect for lukewarm or overheating drums.
High-limit thermostat
The backup safety above the element/burner. If it’s tripping or failed, find the airflow problem that stressed it.
Thermistor (electronic models)
Electronic dryers read a thermistor instead; out-of-spec resistance throws temp codes.
Repair or replace?
Repair — thermostats are $10–$25 parts. Many techs replace the full thermostat set with any element job since access is identical.
