What is a high-voltage capacitor?
Stores a charge that can kill you — and holds it after the microwave is unplugged. This is why microwave repair is professional work.
The high-voltage capacitor works with the transformer and diode to supply the magnetron. It stores a lethal charge and retains it after the appliance is disconnected from the wall, sometimes for a long time. It must be safely discharged through a suitable resistor before anything inside the cabinet is touched. This single component is the reason every guide on this site draws a hard line at the microwave cabinet: filters, bulbs, the waveguide cover and turntable parts are fine for owners, and anything behind the case is not.
