What is an idler pulley?
A spring-loaded wheel that keeps tension on the drum belt; a worn one squeals and lets the belt slip.
The idler pulley rides against the drive belt and a spring pulls it to keep the belt tight. As the bearing dries out it starts to squeal โ a noise that rises and falls with drum speed, which is how you tell it apart from a blower or motor noise that stays constant. A failing idler also lets the belt slip and glaze, so replacing the belt without the idler usually means doing the job twice.
