What is an orifice?
A precisely sized hole metering gas flow to a burner; sized differently for natural gas and propane.
The orifice is a small brass fitting with a drilled hole that determines how much gas reaches the burner. Its diameter is matched to the fuel — propane orifices are smaller than natural gas ones because propane is delivered at higher pressure. Orifices also block with debris and cooking spill, producing a burner that lights weakly or unevenly, and cleaning one is a routine part of gas cooktop service.
