What is an orifice?
A precisely sized hole metering gas flow to a burner. Sized differently for natural gas and propane.
The orifice is a small brass fitting with a drilled hole that determines how much gas reaches the burner. Its diameter is matched to the fuel, propane orifices are smaller than natural gas ones because propane is delivered at higher pressure. Orifices also block with debris and cooking spill, producing a burner that lights weakly or unevenly, and cleaning one is a routine part of gas cooktop service.
