📖 GLOSSARY · PART
What is a splutch?
Whirlpool’s combined spring-and-clutch assembly that engages the wash basket for spin — hence the portmanteau name.
The splutch ("spring" + "clutch") sits under the outer tub on Whirlpool-built top-loaders and is the mechanism the shift actuator physically moves. Its cam ring and drive gear engage either the agitator or the basket. When the plastic cam or the basket drive gear wears, you get grinding during agitation, a basket that spins weakly, or a machine that sounds like it is working while the clothes barely move. It is usually replaced as a kit alongside the actuator.
