What is an evaporator?
The coil inside the freezer where refrigerant boils and absorbs heat — this is where cold is actually made.
Hidden behind the rear freezer panel, the evaporator is where liquid refrigerant boils into gas and pulls heat out of the compartment. A fan blows air across it and distributes that cold through the fridge. Frost naturally forms on it and is cleared by the defrost cycle; when defrost fails, the coil turns into a solid block of ice, airflow stops and the fresh food section warms while the freezer stays cold. Frost on only the first pass of the coil instead points at a low refrigerant charge.
