What causes it — and what each fix costs
Defrost heater burned out
The glass-tube or wire heater under the evaporator opens like a dead lightbulb. Confirmed with a continuity check.
Defrost thermostat/bi-metal failed
If it won’t close when cold, the heater never powers even though it’s fine. The cheaper, equally common cause.
Defrost control (board or timer)
The scheduler dies — mechanical timers on older boxes, main-board logic on new ones.
Defrost sensor/thermistor (electronic)
Bad readings mean the board never calls for defrost.
Repair or replace?
Repair — defrost parts are cheap and this failure has nothing to do with the fridge’s overall health. Techs often replace heater + thermostat together since the teardown is the same.
