What is a filter drier?
A desiccant cartridge in the sealed system that absorbs moisture; must be replaced whenever the system is opened.
The filter drier traps moisture and debris circulating in the refrigerant. Its desiccant saturates the moment it is exposed to air, so it must be replaced every single time the sealed system is opened — reusing one leaves moisture in the system that turns into acid and causes a repeat failure. Skipping the drier is one of the clearest signs of a sealed-system repair done badly.
