What causes it — and what each fix costs
Leak in accessible tubing
A findable, brazeable leak in the condenser or connecting lines: located with electronic sniffer or dye, repaired, system recharged. The good version.
Leak in the evaporator or embedded lines
Leaks inside foam-insulated walls or a corroded evaporator often can’t be economically repaired — the honest quote may be "replace the refrigerator."
"Just top it off"?
A recharge without fixing the leak buys weeks, wastes refrigerant, and is a red flag for the shop offering it. Refrigerant doesn’t get "used up" — if it’s low, it leaked.
Repair or replace?
Accessible leak on a fridge worth saving: repair. Embedded leak on a mainstream box: replace — few sealed-system leak jobs beat the price of a comparable new refrigerator once labor and refrigerant are counted.
