Refrigerator Compressor Replacement Cost
The heart transplant of appliance repair. A dead compressor means no cooling with either total silence, a hot compressor shell that hums then trips off, or endless running with no cold. Replacement means recovering refrigerant, brazing in a new compressor and drier, evacuating, and recharging — legally requiring EPA Section 608 certification.
National averages for independent repair companies. Service-call/diagnostic fees ($75–$150) are usually applied toward the repair. Costs vary by brand, model, and city.
What causes it — and what each fix costs
Compressor failed (mechanical/electrical)
Windings open or short, or the pump seizes. Confirmed by resistance readings and a locked-rotor test after ruling out the $30 relay.
LG/Kenmore linear compressor
The famous case: LG’s linear compressors (2014–2020ish, incl. LG-built Kenmore Elite) failed young enough to trigger a class action. The compressor part carries a 10-YEAR LG warranty — many owners pay labor only, and some qualify for full coverage. Always check before paying.
Not actually the compressor
Relays, capacitors, and boards imitate compressor death constantly. Insist on real electrical diagnosis before authorizing sealed-system work.
Repair or replace?
The classic decision: on a $700 mainstream fridge past year 8, replace. On premium/built-in boxes, an LG under compressor warranty, or a nearly-new unit — repair. Get the warranty status in writing before anyone quotes you full price on an LG.

We'll quote you on hauling it away — or buying it.
Not every refrigerator is worth repairing, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a repair. If you're replacing it, we'll give you a free quote either way: scrap pickup for a machine that's finished, or a cash offer if it still has life in it. Working units, recent models and premium brands are often worth real money.
Common questions
Why is compressor replacement so expensive?
It’s refrigeration work, not parts-swapping: refrigerant recovery, brazing, vacuum, recharge, and certification. The part is often the cheap half of the bill.
Is my LG compressor really covered for 10 years?
The linear compressor PART is warrantied 10 years from purchase on most models (labor typically 5). Registration isn’t required for the statutory warranty — have your purchase date handy and ask LG or the servicer to verify coverage.
