Repair or replace?

Repair for almost everything — elements, igniters, and sensors are cheap and ovens routinely last 15–20 years. A $450 control board on an old builder-grade range is the main case where a new unit wins. High-end ranges (Wolf, Viking, Thermador) are essentially always worth repairing.

Common questions

How long do ovens last?

15–20 years for gas, 13–15 for electric, longer for pro-style ranges. They outlive every other kitchen appliance.

Why did my oven stop working after self-clean?

Self-clean runs the oven hotter than it ever runs otherwise — it’s famous for killing thermal fuses, door locks, and elements that were already marginal. Many techs advise skipping self-clean entirely on electronic ovens.

Gas smell from the oven — what do I do?

A faint whiff at ignition is normal; a persistent gas smell is not. Stop using it, ventilate, don’t flip switches, and call your gas utility or a pro immediately.
