GE Appliances is owned by Haier, and Frigidaire is owned by Electrolux. GE sold its appliance business to Haier in June 2016, and GE Appliances is still based at Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Electrolux bought Frigidaire in 1986 when it bought its parent company, White Consolidated Industries (Wikipedia). Neither change means your machine is hard to fix. It mostly tells you which family of parts and which warranty office you are dealing with.

Answer Box

  • GE, GE Profile, Cafe, Monogram and Hotpoint appliances come from GE Appliances, a Haier company since 2016.
  • Frigidaire and Electrolux appliances come from Electrolux, which has owned Frigidaire since 1986.
  • Parts and warranty service go through each maker, not the old parent company.
  • Use the full model number when you order parts or book a repair.

GE Appliances and Haier

GE closed the sale of its appliance business to Qingdao Haier on June 6, 2016, for $5.6 billion, per the GE press release that day. Appliance Park in Louisville is still the GE Appliances headquarters and its largest operation.

For owners, the support path stays with GE Appliances. The GE name stays on the products under a trademark license, as the GE Appliances site footer says. Parts still come through GE Appliances. If you own a GE GTW465ASNWW washer or a GE Profile fridge, the support and parts path is the same GE Appliances one.

Hotpoint is part of the same family. Wikipedia lists GE, GE Profile, Café, Monogram, Haier and Hotpoint as GE Appliances brands, with Hotpoint in the Americas only.

Frigidaire and Electrolux

Frigidaire began as a General Motors brand. GM sold it to White Consolidated Industries in 1979 for about $120 million, and Electrolux bought White Consolidated in 1986, which brought Frigidaire with it (Wikipedia). Wikipedia lists US Frigidaire plants in Springfield, Tennessee and Anderson, South Carolina.

Frigidaire and Electrolux are sold as separate brands by the same owner. Do not assume a part fits across them. Look it up by your full model number.

Why Ownership Matters for a Repair

  • Parts come from the maker. A GE part number is looked up through GE Appliances. A Frigidaire part is looked up through Electrolux. Your model number is the key.
  • Warranty goes through the maker. If your machine is still under the factory warranty, call the number in the owner manual before you hire anyone, so you keep coverage.
  • Some Kenmore models are cousins. Kenmore model numbers that start with 253 or 790 point to the Frigidaire and Electrolux family, and 362 or 363 point to GE, per the iFixit maker code list. Our post on who makes Kenmore appliances explains the codes.

Is One Easier to Fix Than the Other?

Both are common brands, so parts for most models are easy to get and most local techs see them every week. The bigger factor is the type of machine. A basic electric range with a simple control is easy to fix on any brand. A fridge with a sealed system leak is a big job on any brand. Our cost guides for the refrigerator, oven and dishwasher show what drives the price.

Model Guides We Keep

We have model pages for many popular machines from both families. A few are the Frigidaire FFTR1814TW fridge, the Frigidaire FCRE3052AS range, the GE JB645RKSS range and the GE GDF630PSMSS dishwasher. Browse all of them on the model guides page.

Buying Used or Inheriting an Older Machine

Arizona has a lot of rentals, snowbird homes and garage fridges, so many people end up with a GE or Frigidaire they did not pick. Before you count on it, take a minute to check a few things.

  • Find the model and serial tag and take a photo of it. You will need it for any part or service call.
  • Look up the owner manual by model number on the maker site. It lists clearances, cleaning steps and error codes.
  • Check for open recalls on the maker site or at the Consumer Product Safety Commission site, using the model number.
  • Run it once while you watch. Listen for grinding, look for leaks and feel for heat where there should be none.

If anything seems off, have it checked before you load it with food or laundry. A small repair now is cheaper than a ruined load later.

Getting Your GE or Frigidaire Fixed

Out of warranty, any qualified independent company can work on both brands. When you call, give the brand, the full model number and what the machine is doing. You can find an appliance repair company near you across Arizona.
