How Often Should You Change a Refrigerator Water Filter in Arizona?
Every six months, sooner if flow slows or ice shrinks. What a fridge filter does with Phoenix water, why it misses hard water, and how to spot fakes.
Change a refrigerator water filter every six months. Change it sooner if the water slows down, tastes off, or the ice comes out small. That six month rule comes from Whirlpool, Frigidaire and the EPA. In Arizona there is one more thing to know. The filter is not a water softener. Phoenix tap water measured 172 to 302 ppm hard in 2025 (City of Phoenix), and that hardness goes right through a new filter.
We list more than 600 appliance repair companies across Arizona and keep a repair guide for every common fridge fault. In our dispenser and ice maker guides, a clogged filter is the first thing to check. It is a $20 to $60 part. So this post covers when to change it, what it really does with Arizona water, how to avoid the fakes, and how to tell a filter problem from a real repair.
Answer Box
- Every six months. Whirlpool, Frigidaire and the EPA all land there.
- Sooner if the signs show up. Slow water, cloudy water, an off taste, or small ice.
- Do not wait for the clocks. Whirlpool says change it when the clocks change. Most of Arizona never changes them.
- It is not a softener. Phoenix water is hard, and the filter leaves that hardness in.
- Skip the cheap fakes. In industry tests, most knockoff filters failed at lead.
- New filter, same weak flow? Then the filter was not the problem. Look at the inlet valve or a frozen line.
What the Makers and the EPA Say
The answer is the same nearly everywhere you look. Six months.
| Who says it | How often | The extra detail |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | Every six months | How often can depend on the quality of your tap water. Only buy filters certified by NSF International. |
| Frigidaire | Every six months | Put in a new filter before you hook up a fridge that sat unused, like after a move. Order the same filter type that came out. |
| EPA | About 6 months | Replacement cartridges run about $20 to $50, at February 2024 prices. |
The EPA guide sets a fridge filter against the other home filters. A fridge cartridge sits right in the middle. It lasts longer than a pitcher and far less time than an under sink system.
Average cartridge life in months, on a 0 to 24 month scale. Numbers from the EPA water filter guide, which says life varies by model, use and water quality. Chart made by us from those numbers.
Six months is a starting point, not a law. Whirlpool says the right timing depends on your tap water. A big family that fills bottles all day pushes more water through the cartridge than a couple who only uses the ice. Your manual or the filter box will list the maker's own limit for your model.
Why the Clock Trick Fails in Arizona
Whirlpool's tip for remembering is a good one almost anywhere else. Change the filter every time you set your clocks back or forward (Whirlpool).
Arizona does not do that. The state has skipped daylight saving time for about 40 years, under an exemption from a 1973 federal law (ABC15). The Navajo Nation is the exception and does change its clocks. Everyone else in Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa or Yuma gets no reminder at all.
So pick two dates that mean something to you. We like April 1 and October 1. April gets a fresh filter in before the summer. October puts a new one in after the monsoon and the late summer taste season. Write the date on the filter with a marker the day you put it in.
What a Fridge Filter Does With Arizona Water
Whirlpool says certified filters fall into three groups. Look and taste, health concerns, and emerging contaminants (Whirlpool). The EPA says to look for NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, which covers dissolved lead, and NSF/ANSI 42 Class 1, which covers the tiny particles that can carry lead (EPA).
Now hold that list up next to what actually comes out of a Phoenix tap.
| In Phoenix tap water, 2025 | What to look for on the filter box | Will the fridge filter fix it? |
|---|---|---|
| Chlorine, 0.84 ppm highest yearly average | A taste and odor claim, the look and taste group Whirlpool describes | Yes, if the filter is certified for it |
| Lead from service lines and home plumbing. 2 of 56 homes tested were over the action level | NSF/ANSI 53 with a lead reduction claim | Yes, if it carries that claim and you change it on time |
| Hardness, 172 to 302 ppm | No refrigerator filter standard covers it | No. Scale still forms on the nozzle and in the ice |
| Musty taste in late summer and fall from canal algae | A taste and odor claim | It may help. A fresh filter is the place to start |
Water numbers from the City of Phoenix 2025 Water Quality Report. Filter terms from the EPA and Whirlpool.
Phoenix disinfects all of its water with chlorine. Its highest running yearly average in 2025 was 0.84 ppm, well under the limit of 4 (Phoenix). That is the taste a filter is bought to remove.
The city also says algae in the canals cause a musty taste and smell in late summer and fall. The plants remove the algae, but the smell can linger (Phoenix). If your ice tastes like a basement right about now, that is likely why.
Lead is the health reason. Phoenix met the federal action level, but 2 of 56 homes tested in 2024 came in over it. The city says lead comes mostly from service lines and home plumbing. Phoenix says a filter certified to reduce lead works, as long as you follow its instructions (Phoenix). Its report also warns that not following a home system's upkeep instructions can result in potentially unsafe water. An overdue filter counts.
Then there is hardness. Phoenix measured 172 to 302 ppm in 2025, which is 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon (Phoenix). The USGS calls anything over 180 very hard (USGS). None of the three filter groups is about hardness. The calcium goes right through. That is why the dispenser nozzle grows a white crust and the ice can look cloudy even with a new filter. Our post on white residue from Arizona hard water covers what that scale does inside other appliances.
Signs You Need a New One Sooner
Whirlpool lists the signs. Cloudy water, poor taste, and poor flow from debris clogging the filter (Whirlpool). Many fridges also light up a status light. Frigidaire says the Water Filter Status on most of its models will light up when it is time (Frigidaire). Treat the light as a reminder, not a water test.
- The glass fills slowly. The most common sign. A clogged filter is the number one cause of weak flow in our water dispenser repair guide.
- Ice comes out small or hollow. That means the ice maker is not getting a full fill. Our ice maker guide says to check the filter first, then water pressure, then the inlet valve.
- The water tastes like chlorine or plastic. Our dispenser guide puts that on an overdue filter, or on water that sat in the line while you were away.
- You just moved the fridge. Frigidaire says to put in a new filter before you hook it back up.
- Sputtering from a brand new filter. That is normal. Our DIY guide says to run 2 to 4 gallons through to clear the air and loose carbon.
Off Brand and Fake Filters
A two pack of off brand filters for the price of one name brand filter is tempting. Some are fine. The problem is that you cannot tell the good ones from the fakes by looking.
In 2018 the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers tested counterfeit fridge filters. Only 2 of 18 removed lead for the full six month life. Seven of 8 failed to remove 90 percent of cysts. When clean water sat in 46 of them, ten compounds came out over the allowed limits (AHAM). AHAM is the trade group for appliance makers, so they have a stake in this. The test results still line up with Whirlpool's advice to buy only NSF certified filters (Whirlpool).
This is what we would do.
- Buy the filter your fridge maker sells, or one that lists the exact NSF/ANSI standard and the exact contaminant on the box.
- Be careful with prices that seem too good to be true. AHAM lists that as a warning sign.
- If lead is your worry, look for NSF/ANSI 53 with a lead claim. A taste claim alone does not cover lead.
How to Change It Without a Mess
This is the easiest job in the kitchen. No tools, five to ten minutes. Our step by step guide on how to replace a refrigerator water filter covers every filter style. The steps, in order.
- Find it. Inside the ceiling of the fridge, between the crispers, in the base grille, or in an upper corner.
- Read the part number off the old filter and buy the same type.
- Twist or press to release the old one. A little water will drip, so keep a towel close.
- Push the new one in and turn it until it locks.
- Run 2 to 4 gallons through the dispenser to push out air and loose carbon.
- Hold the filter reset button until the light changes. Your manual shows where it is.
The first few glasses may sputter. That is just air in the line.
When the Filter Is Not the Problem
If the water is still slow with a fresh filter in, stop buying filters. Something else is going on. Our Arizona repair guides show the usual suspects below. These are price ranges from our guides for independent repair companies in the state, not quotes.
| Symptom with a new filter | Likely cause | Typical pro repair in Arizona |
|---|---|---|
| Weak or no water at the door | Water inlet valve, frozen door line, dispenser switch | $100 to $250 |
| Small ice or no ice | Low fill from the inlet valve or water pressure, or the ice maker itself | $150 to $400 |
| Service call to diagnose | Usually put toward the repair | $75 to $150 |
Sources for those ranges are our own dispenser and ice maker repair guides. A water inlet valve is the electric valve on the back of the fridge that lets water in. The inlet valve guide shows how to test and swap one.
On French door and side by side models, the water line in the door can freeze when the door area runs too cold. Our dispenser guide says thawing it is free, and a repeat freeze means adjusting the temperature or adding a heater kit. If it still will not flow after that, a pro earns the service call.

Quick Questions
Are off brand refrigerator water filters good?
Some are, but you cannot tell by looking. In 2018 tests by the appliance makers' trade group, only 2 of 18 counterfeit filters removed lead for the full six months. Buy your fridge maker's filter, or one that names the exact NSF/ANSI standard and contaminant on the box.
Is it safe to drink water from the fridge with an old filter?
Phoenix tap water met every federal and state standard in 2025. The risk is that an old filter stops doing its job. Whirlpool says old filters may not keep contaminants out as well, and Phoenix warns that skipping home filter upkeep can leave water unsafe. Change it on time.
Does a refrigerator water filter remove hard water?
No. Fridge filters are certified for taste and odor, health contaminants like lead, and emerging contaminants. Hardness is not one of them. Phoenix water runs 172 to 302 ppm hard, so scale on the nozzle and cloudy ice can still happen with a new filter.
What happens if you don't change your refrigerator water filter?
Flow slows down, ice gets small or hollow, and the water can taste like chlorine again. A clogged filter is the most common cause of a weak dispenser. A certified lead filter is only tested to work for its rated life.
How do I remember to change my fridge filter in Arizona?
Whirlpool says to change it when the clocks change, but most of Arizona does not change its clocks. Pick two fixed dates, like April 1 and October 1, and write the install date on the filter.
Why is my water still slow after changing the filter?
Then the filter was not the cause. Check that the new filter is fully locked in, then look at a frozen door line or the water inlet valve. In our Arizona guides a dispenser repair runs $100 to $250.
