A Smelly Dishwasher Is Usually a Free Fix in Arizona
A smelly dishwasher is usually a dirty filter. Match the odor to its source, from sewage to rotten eggs, plus two Arizona causes the big guides skip.
A cup of vinegar is the fix everyone reaches for when a dishwasher stinks. It rarely touches the cause. The most common source of the smell is a dirty filter, says Maytag, and the same page warns that using vinegar often could harm the machine. Clean the filter first. Then match the smell to its source, because sewage, rotten eggs and burning plastic each point somewhere different.
We list Arizona appliance repair companies and keep a cost guide for every common dishwasher fault. On those guides, almost every fix tied to a smell runs $0 to $180 if you do it yourself. Only a failed pump gets into the hundreds. So start with the cheap checks, and add the two Arizona causes the national guides never mention, the tap water and the water heater.
- Rotten food or fish. The filter or the sump under it is holding old food.
- Sewage or wet dog. Sink water is getting back in. Check the drain hose loop and the air gap.
- Rotten eggs. Smell your hot tap. If only the hot water stinks, it's the water heater.
- Musty in late summer or fall. In Phoenix, it can be the tap water itself.
- Burning. Stop the cycle. Something plastic may be on the heater.
- Smell keeps coming back. The water may not be getting hot enough. That one can be a repair.
Match the Smell to the Source
Your nose is the best tool you own for this. Maytag says a fish or rotten food smell points at a clogged drain or a dirty filter, and a sewage or wet dog smell points at a drain problem. The table adds the rest.
| The smell | Where it comes from | First thing to do | Arizona cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten food or fish | Dirty filter or food in the sump | Twist out the filter and scrub it | $0 to $120 |
| Sewage or wet dog | Low drain hose, clogged air gap, dirty disposal | Raise the hose loop, clean the air gap | $0 to $180 |
| Musty or moldy | Door gasket, damp closed tub, water not hot enough | Wipe the gasket, run the sink hot first | $0 to $280 |
| Rotten eggs | Hot water from the water heater | Smell a glass of hot tap water | A plumber job, not a dishwasher repair |
| Burning plastic | Plastic touching the heating element | Stop, let it cool, pull the plastic out | $0 |
| New machine smell | Normal for a new install | Run a few loads | $0 |
The cost column comes from our own Arizona guides for a dishwasher that won't drain and a dishwasher that won't clean. The low end is what it costs to do it yourself. The high end is a pro doing the same job. The new machine row comes from Frigidaire, which says that smell is normal at first and goes away with use.
Clean the Filter Before You Buy Anything
Every cycle pushes food bits into the filter at the bottom of the tub. Bosch says that is why a dishwasher smells in the first place.
Manual filters are common in modern dishwashers, and they don't clean themselves. Consumer Reports says that if you don't know yours needs cleaning, the trapped food can cause the smell. A Maytag brand manager told the same outlet to clean it once a month.
Our guide puts the job at 15 to 30 minutes.
- Pull out the bottom rack.
- Twist the filter and lift it out. Your manual shows how for your model.
- Rinse it under hot water. Soak it in warm soapy water if food is stuck on, then scrub with a soft brush.
- Look at the spray arm holes. Bosch says to clear any blocked ones with a toothpick.
- Lock the filter back in place.
Our step by step guide, how to clean a dishwasher filter and spray arms, has the details.
If the tub holds dirty water after the cycle ends, the smell is a drain problem. Scoop the water out before you go further.
The Sewage Smell Lives Under the Sink
A sewage smell rarely starts inside the dishwasher. It comes up the drain hose from the sink.
The hose has to climb before it drops into the sink drain or the disposal. That rise is the high loop. Maytag's install help says the loop should be at least 20 inches off the floor, and to use an air gap if it is lower. Without it, dirty sink water can flow back into the tub and sit there between loads.
Open the cabinet under the sink and check three things.
- The loop. Measure from the cabinet floor to the top of the hose. Under 20 inches? Lift it and strap it to the underside of the counter.
- The air gap. That's the small chrome cap by the faucet, if your kitchen has one. Pull the cap and clean out the gunk. Our cost guide puts a pro fix at up to $120.
- The disposal. If you have one, the dishwasher usually drains into it. Maytag lists a clogged disposal as a place to check. Run it with cold water to clear old food before you start the dishwasher.
A kinked or plugged hose runs $0 to $180 on our drain cost guide.
Rotten Eggs That Come From the Water Heater
Some smells aren't the dishwasher at all.
Run the kitchen faucet on hot for a minute and fill a glass. Then fill one from the cold side. Smell both.
If only the hot glass smells like rotten eggs, the gas is coming from your water heater. Penn State Extension explains why. Water heaters carry a magnesium rod to slow rust, and that rod can turn sulfates in the water into hydrogen sulfide. In rare cases, the same source says, a water softener can add to it.
The dishwasher runs on hot water, so it fills the kitchen with that smell. No dishwasher part will fix it. Call a plumber about the water heater instead.
Two Arizona Causes the Big Guides Skip
The tap water can smell musty in the fall. The City of Phoenix 2025 water quality report says algae in the canals in late summer and fall are a major source of a musty odor and taste. Treatment removes the algae, but the smell can linger. The city uses activated carbon to cut it. So if your dishes smell musty this time of year, smell a glass of cold tap water before you tear the dishwasher apart.
Hard water gives the smell something to grab. The same report lists Phoenix hardness at 172 to 302 ppm, or 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon. It says hard water can cause scaling on fixtures and in water heaters. Maytag says soap scum acts like a glue trap for food bits inside a dishwasher. Scale on the tub walls and filter mesh works the same way. Bosch tells owners to run a descaler a few times a year for limescale. Our post on white residue from Arizona water covers how to descale, and our hard water entry explains the numbers.
Hot water matters more than you think. Whirlpool says water should be 120°F as it enters the dishwasher. It also says to run the sink nearest the dishwasher until the water is hot before you start. Consumer Reports adds that mold that keeps coming back can mean the machine isn't reaching a high enough temperature.
Vinegar, Citric Acid and Bleach
Cleaners work after the filter is clean, not instead of it.
- Vinegar. Maytag says to put two cups of white vinegar in a dishwasher safe bowl on the bottom rack and run a normal cycle with no detergent and no heated dry. Save it for deep cleans. Maytag says frequent use could harm the dishwasher.
- Citric acid. An LG engineer told Consumer Reports to add 3 teaspoons of citric acid, or the cleaner your maker recommends, to the detergent cup and run the self clean cycle empty once a month.
- Bleach for mold. A GE Appliances manager told Consumer Reports to wipe mold with 1/8 cup bleach in 1 gallon of water, then run an empty normal cycle. Skip bleach on a stainless steel tub. It can damage the finish.
- The door gasket. Maytag says to wipe the gasket with warm soapy water and dry it with a clean rag. Mold likes the lips of that seal.
Leaving dirty dishes in a closed machine for days also breeds the smell. Frigidaire says to run a rinse only cycle if you aren't ready for a full load.
When the Smell Means a Repair
Most smells end with a clean filter and a raised hose. A few mean a part has failed.
- Water still sits in the tub after you cleaned the filter, the hose and the air gap. The drain pump is next. Our guide puts it at $150 to $300.
- Mold keeps coming back even with 120°F water at the sink. The machine may not be heating its water, and Consumer Reports says to book a service call. Our cost guide lists a heating element at $120 to $280.
- Burning with no plastic in sight. Turn off the breaker and leave it off until a tech looks. Maytag says a melted plastic smell means something touched the heating element, so check for a fallen lid first.
Arizona shops usually charge a service call of $75 to $150, and most put it toward the repair. Tell them the brand, model number, the smell, and what you already cleaned. See our dishwasher repair cost guide for the full range of parts.

Quick Questions
How do I get the smell out of my dishwasher?
Clean the filter first. Twist it out, rinse it in hot water and scrub off stuck food. Wipe the door gasket. Then run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, or two cups of white vinegar in a bowl on the bottom rack. If the smell is sewage, check the drain hose loop under the sink.
Why does my dishwasher smell like sewage?
Sink water is most likely getting back into the tub. Maytag says the drain hose loop should be at least 20 inches off the floor, with an air gap if it is lower. Also clean the air gap cap by the faucet and run the disposal before you start a load.
Why does my dishwasher smell like rotten eggs?
Smell a glass of hot tap water and a glass of cold. If only the hot one smells, the water heater is the source. Penn State Extension says the magnesium rod in a water heater can turn sulfates into hydrogen sulfide. A plumber fixes that, not an appliance tech.
How often should I clean my dishwasher filter?
Once a month, per Maytag's advice in Consumer Reports. Check your manual first. A self cleaning filter needs less care than a manual one.
Is it normal for a new dishwasher to smell?
Yes, for a while. Frigidaire says a new smell is normal right after install and goes away with use. If it hasn't faded after a few weeks, go through the filter and drain checks.
Can vinegar damage a dishwasher?
Maytag says frequent vinegar use could harm a dishwasher because it is acidic. Use it for an occasional deep clean, not every week.
