Ice Maker Repair or Replacement Cost
No ice, tiny or hollow cubes, ice with an off taste, cubes welded into a block, or the maker leaking into the bin. Ice makers are the most failure-prone convenience on a refrigerator — and because most are self-contained modules, the usual "repair" is swapping the whole unit, which keeps costs sane.
National averages for independent repair companies. Service-call/diagnostic fees ($75–$150) are usually applied toward the repair. Costs vary by brand, model, and city.
What causes it — and what each fix costs
Ice maker module worn out
Motors, thermostats, and ejectors age out. Swapping the assembly is the standard fix on most brands.
Water inlet valve or frozen fill tube
No water reaching the maker: the dual-solenoid valve dies, or the fill tube freezes into a plug (often from low water pressure dribbling).
Clogged water filter
Six-month-old filters choke flow: small/hollow cubes are the tell. A $40 self-fix.
Samsung french-door freeze-up
The famous one — many Samsung french-door ice makers ice over chronically. Samsung service bulletins prescribe a sealing/fix kit; ask specifically for the bulletin fix, not just a new maker.
Repair or replace?
Repair (the module, not the fridge). If an ice maker becomes a repeat offender, a countertop ice machine is the budget workaround nobody regrets.

We'll quote you on hauling it away — or buying it.
Not every refrigerator is worth repairing, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a repair. If you're replacing it, we'll give you a free quote either way: scrap pickup for a machine that's finished, or a cash offer if it still has life in it. Working units, recent models and premium brands are often worth real money.
Common questions
Why is my ice cloudy or small?
Cloudy is normal (dissolved air). Small or hollow means low water fill — check the filter first, then pressure and the inlet valve.
How long should ice production take?
A healthy maker produces a tray every 90 minutes-ish, 8–10 lb/day. First ice after install/repair takes up to 24 hours.
