Ice Maker Not Working? How to Fix It and What It Costs in Arizona

If your ice maker stopped making ice, check three things first. The shut off arm, the water supply line, and the water filter. Those fix most no ice calls for free or for $20 to $60. If they are fine, the usual culprits are a frozen fill tube or a bad inlet valve, and in Arizona hard water scale is a big reason the valve fails.

This guide goes in the order a repair pro checks things, with what each fix costs in Arizona. A pro repair runs $150 to $400 in total. Most of the causes are DIY friendly.

• Lift the wire arm or flip the switch to ON. Arm up means the maker is off.
• Check the freezer reads 0 to 5°F. A warm freezer makes weak or no ice.
• Pull the water filter. If it is over 6 months old, replace it. Hard water makes this one shorter.
• Look behind the fridge for a kinked line or a half closed shutoff valve.
• Look at the fill tube behind the ice maker for a plug of ice.
• If the maker has power and water but still makes nothing, the valve or the module is next. That is a $100 to $400 fix.

Start with the stupid stuff, because it is the cheapest. Whirlpool lists a switched off ice maker as the most common reason for no ice. Look for the wire shut off arm. If it is lifted up, the maker is off. Push it down. On models with a button or a screen setting, turn it on there.

Next, check the freezer temperature. Whirlpool says to set the freezer between 0 and 5°F. If your fridge was just moved, cleaned, or loaded with warm food, give it a day.

Then try a reset. Whirlpool says to hold the ice maker reset button for a few seconds. If your fridge has no reset button, unplug it for 1 minute and plug it back in.

Brand new fridge or new water line? Frigidaire says air in new plumbing can cause 2 or 3 empty ice cycles. It also says the first ice can take up to 24 hours after the fridge cools.

This is the cheapest fix. Small, hollow, or very few cubes are the tell. Water barely trickles in, so the mold under fills.

Whirlpool says to replace the filter at 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or sooner because usage and water quality can call for more frequent changes. Phoenix water is hard, so lean toward the short side. If you just changed the filter and the ice stopped, Whirlpool says to check that it is locked in and sealed. Pull it out and run the dispenser. If water comes out with the filter removed, it was installed wrong.

No water, no ice. Check that the shutoff valve is fully open. Then look for a kinked or crushed line. Whirlpool warns that pushing the fridge too far back against the wall can pinch the line.

A quick test is to run the water dispenser. If water barely comes out, the problem is upstream of the ice maker. If the dispenser is strong but the maker is dry, keep reading.

Cost is $0 if it is a valve or kink. DIY friendly. Shut off the water before you disconnect anything. Pull the fridge plug before you reach behind it.

The fill tube is the short plastic tube that carries water into the ice maker. Beacon links a frozen fill tube to low water pressure, a seeping inlet valve, or freezer temperature trouble. A slow drip freezes into a plug before it reaches the mold. Then the cubes get tiny, and then they stop.

You can usually see it. Look at the back of the ice maker for a tube with a solid ice cap. Unplug the fridge, remove the bin, and let it thaw. Use a hair dryer on low if you are impatient. Never chip it with a knife or screwdriver.

If it freezes again within days, the tube is not the real problem. Something is feeding it a slow leak, usually the valve in the next section. Samsung french door models are known for this. The inlet valve is the electric gate on the back or bottom of the fridge that lets water in. Beacon lists three failure modes. Electrical failure, mineral clogging, and a small leak that refreezes in the fill tube.

A simple test is the dispenser. If the dispenser water is weak and the line is clear, the valve is a prime suspect. A fridge that hums or clicks but never fills the maker points to the same part. A pro tests the valve coil with a meter. Unplug the fridge before you touch any wiring.

If power, water, filter, and valve all check out, the maker itself is dying. Motors, thermostats, and ejector arms wear out. Cubes freeze in the mold but never drop. Or the arm keeps cycling and never fills the bin.

Most makers are one self contained module. That keeps the repair simple. The whole unit swaps out, usually in 45 to 90 minutes. Cost is $150 to $400, with the part at $40 to $200. Moderate DIY. Pull the plug first.

Hard water scale is the big one. The City of Phoenix 2025 water quality report lists total hardness of 172 to 302 ppm, which is about 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon. The USGS calls anything over 180 mg/L very hard. Much of Phoenix tap water sits in that band.

Hard water leaves calcium scale. A fridge inlet valve has tiny screens and small solenoid gates. Scale can clog them or stop them from sealing. That ties back to the causes above. A valve that barely opens makes a frozen fill tube. A valve that leaks a little does the same. Beacon names mineral clogging as an inlet valve failure.

What to do about it. Change the filter on the early side. Whirlpool leaves room to change it sooner when your water calls for it. Use the 6 month mark as the longest you wait. A filter that stays too long gets loaded with scale and slows the flow.

Garage fridges. A garage fridge with an ice maker lives in a harsher spot than a kitchen unit. Check your owner's manual for the room temperature range your model is built for. If the garage runs outside that range, the fridge can struggle to cool and the maker may stall. A shaded spot and clear air around the back help.

Power flickers. After a monsoon outage, give the fridge time to cool. The Frigidaire page says ice can take up to 24 hours after the fridge cools. A reset by unplugging for 1 minute is a normal first step.

Call a pro if the filter is new, the supply line is clear, the fill tube is thawed, and there is still no ice. Also call if the fridge is leaking, the valve is humming without water, or the sealed system is involved. Only a certified tech opens a sealed system. Tell them the brand and model number, which is on a sticker inside the fridge. Say whether the dispenser water works. Say when you last changed the filter. Say if the tube has frozen before. Repair the ice maker, not the fridge. A $150 to $400 module swap is far cheaper than a new refrigerator. If the maker keeps failing, a countertop ice machine is the budget workaround.

Think about replacing the whole fridge when the ice maker is only one of several problems. That could be a failing compressor, a refrigerant leak, or a fridge that no longer holds temperature. If it is still cooling fine, fix the maker.
