What causes it — and what each fix costs
Biofilm in the tub and boot
Detergent overdose + cold washes + closed door = mold farm. Run 2–3 hot cleaning cycles with washer cleaner or bleach, scrub the boot folds, and leave the door open between loads. Free.
Rotten debris in the pump filter

Boot beyond cleaning
Once mold is embedded in the rubber, replacement is the only real fix.
Sewer smell — drain standpipe
If it smells like sewage, the washer’s drain hose may be sealed too tightly into the standpipe, siphoning the P-trap dry. A plumbing fix, often free.
