What causes it — and what each fix costs
Motor overheating (thermal overload)
A worn motor with dry bushings runs hot and its internal overload trips. Runs-cools-runs is the classic sign; motors fail gradually this way.
Poor airflow tripping hi-limit
Vent or blower restriction spikes temps and the hi-limit thermostat cuts power. Fix the airflow, replace the thermostat if it’s weakened.
Intermittent door switch
Vibration flexes a dying switch and the dryer thinks the door opened. Cheap fix.
Moisture sensor ending cycles early
On auto-dry, filmed-over sensor bars read "dry" instantly. Clean with alcohol — free.
Failing timer or board
Least likely; diagnose the thermal causes first.
Repair or replace?
If it’s the motor on a budget dryer past 10 years, weigh replacement. Every other cause is a repair without question.
