Dryer Burning Smell — Diagnosis & Repair Cost
Stop the dryer. A burning smell is the one dryer symptom that shouldn’t wait for a convenient appointment — it’s either lint meeting the heat source or a friction part cooking itself, and both are how dryer fires start. The fixes, caught early, are cheap.
National averages for independent repair companies. Service-call/diagnostic fees ($75–$150) are usually applied toward the repair. Costs vary by brand, model, and city.
What causes it — and what each fix costs
Lint burning on the element/burner
Lint bypasses a full screen or worn seals and lands on the heat source — acrid smell, sometimes visible smoke. Needs a teardown cleaning of the heat path and airflow fix.
Slipping belt
Burnt-rubber smell under heavy loads — the belt glazes on a sticking drum or weak idler.
Seized roller or idler
A locked wheel drags and friction-burns — hot plastic smell plus squeal or thump.
Motor windings burning
Sharp electrical odor — see the motor guide.
New-dryer smell (first uses)
Manufacturing oils burning off a brand-new element for the first few cycles is normal and fades.
Repair or replace?
Repair, urgently. Unplug it, do a visual check of the lint screen cavity and behind the drum if you’re able, and don’t run it unattended until the smell is explained and fixed.

We'll quote you on hauling it away — or buying it.
Not every dryer is worth repairing, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a repair. If you're replacing it, we'll give you a free quote either way: scrap pickup for a machine that's finished, or a cash offer if it still has life in it. Working units, recent models and premium brands are often worth real money.
Common questions
Burning smell but everything works — keep using it?
No. "Still works" is how most lint fires start. Diagnose first — the likely fixes are all around $150.
