What causes it — and what each fix costs
Broken latch hooks
The plastic hooks on the door snap with age and repeated slamming, so the door no longer actuates the interlock switches.
Handle cracked or detached
Cosmetic and functional. On many models the handle is available separately and fits from outside.
Door spring or latch board failure
Springs behind the latch assembly fatigue, leaving the latch unable to return.
Hinge wear causing door sag
A door that has dropped stops meeting the switches squarely and eventually stops closing at all.
Repair or replace?
A broken latch is worth repairing on any over-the-range or built-in unit and is often quick work. It is also not a fault to live with: a door that does not latch properly is a door that is not sealing microwave energy inside the cabinet, and a microwave should never be run in that state.

Very often, yes. The latch hooks have to physically push the interlock switches. Worn hooks let the door look and feel closed while the switches never see it.
Can I keep using it if the handle is broken but the door shuts?
If the door still latches and seals properly, it is not dangerous — but handles usually break because the door is being pulled hard, which is a sign the latch is stiff or worn too.
