What causes it — and what each fix costs
Straight swap, same brand and venting
Existing mounting plate and duct configuration match. The quickest and cheapest scenario.
New mounting plate and cabinet drilling
Different manufacturer means a new template, new holes through the cabinet base, and careful measurement.
Venting reconfiguration
Switching between recirculating, vertical and horizontal exhaust means rotating the blower and fitting the correct damper.
New duct run or wall penetration
Adding external venting where none existed. This is carpentry and ducting as well as appliance work.
Electrical outlet relocation
The outlet has to sit inside the cabinet above. If it is in the wrong place, an electrician is involved.
Repair or replace?
Over-the-range microwaves are heavy, awkward, mounted overhead and wired into a cabinet — this is genuinely a two-person job, and the most common DIY injury in the category is dropping one. If you are replacing like-for-like and have a competent helper it is achievable; anything involving new venting or electrical work is not.

Common questions
Can I install an over-the-range microwave myself?
A like-for-like swap with two people is realistic if you are comfortable with the weight and the wiring is already correct. New ducting, a new outlet location or a different mounting pattern is professional work.
How high above the cooktop does it need to be?
Manufacturers specify a minimum clearance above the cooking surface — usually around 30 inches from the cooktop to the bottom of the microwave. Check the specific installation manual, because a unit fitted too low is both a fire risk and a warranty problem.
Does it have to vent outside?
No. Most over-the-range microwaves can be configured to vent outside or to recirculate through a charcoal filter. Venting outside removes heat and moisture far more effectively, so choose it if the ducting exists.
