What causes it — and what each fix costs
Turntable roller ring or coupler worn
A rhythmic grinding that matches the plate rotation. Cheap and often an owner fix.
Cooling fan blade or bearing
A rattle or whine that runs the whole cycle, independent of the plate.
Exhaust blower (over-the-range)
Loose blower wheel or dry bearings on the vent fan — often the loudest noise in an OTR unit.
High-voltage transformer hum
A deep electrical hum under load. Sometimes normal ageing, sometimes the start of a genuine failure.
Magnetron failing
A loud buzz combined with weak or no heating points at the high-voltage side rather than anything mechanical.
Repair or replace?
Work out whether the noise tracks the turntable or runs continuously — that single observation splits the cheap causes from the expensive ones. Grinding that matches the plate is a few dollars. A continuous electrical buzz with poor heating is the expensive end, and on a countertop unit it is where the repair conversation ends.

How do I tell a mechanical noise from an electrical one?
Run it with the glass plate and roller ring removed and a cup of water inside on a short cycle. If the noise disappears, it was the turntable assembly. If it stays, it is the fan or the high-voltage side.
My microwave has always hummed. Is that normal?
A steady hum under load is normal — that is the transformer. What matters is change: a new noise, a louder noise, or a hum that arrives alongside weaker heating.
