What causes it โ€” and what each fix costs

Bulb burned out

$5โ€“$30

The obvious one, and on most over-the-range units the cooktop bulb is reachable from outside without opening anything.

Wrong bulb fitted

$5โ€“$30

Microwaves need appliance-rated bulbs that tolerate heat and vibration. A standard household bulb fails quickly.

โœ“ DIY-friendly

Bulb socket corroded or cracked

$80โ€“$180

Heat and steam degrade the socket, especially on the cooktop side of an OTR unit.

Light switch or control fault

$120โ€“$280

Less common โ€” the light circuit runs through the control on many models.

Repair or replace?

Always the cheapest possible starting point: buy the correct appliance-rated bulb and try that first. On most over-the-range microwaves the cooktop light is behind a small external cover and takes minutes. The cavity light on many models sits behind the cabinet, and that turns a $5 bulb into a service call โ€” which on a countertop unit is not worth making.

โ™ป๏ธ DECIDED NOT TO FIX IT?

We'll quote you on hauling it away โ€” or buying it.

Not every microwave is worth repairing, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a repair. If you're replacing it, we'll give you a free quote either way: scrap pickup for a machine that's finished, or a cash offer if it still has life in it. Working units, recent models and premium brands are often worth real money.

Common questions

Can I use a normal LED bulb?

Only if it is rated for appliance use and matches the fitting and wattage in the manual. Ordinary bulbs fail fast in the heat and vibration, and an oversized wattage can damage the housing.

Is it worth paying someone to change a microwave bulb?

On an over-the-range or built-in unit where the cavity bulb sits behind the cabinet, it usually gets bundled with another repair rather than booked on its own. If it is the only fault on a countertop unit, live with it.
