A magnetron job runs $150–$400 fitted. Against a countertop microwave, that is a replacement decision every time. Against an over-the-range unit at $400–$600 installed it is worth doing on a machine under seven years old, especially if the rest of it is clean and the door and panel are sound. On a built-in or drawer unit, replace the magnetron — the alternative is a four-figure appliance and a cabinetry job.

How long does a magnetron last?
Most last the life of the microwave — seven to ten years of ordinary use. They fail early mainly from running the unit empty, from arcing left unrepaired, or from restricted cooling airflow.
Does replacing the magnetron make it like new?
It restores full heating power, yes. But a magnetron failing at year nine on a unit with a tired door, a greasy fan and a fading panel is a sign of what comes next.
Why is the labour so high for a cheap-ish part?
Because the technician has to safely discharge the high-voltage capacitor, strip the cabinet, transfer the antenna and gasket correctly, and test the output afterwards. It is careful work, not quick work.
