What causes it — and what each fix costs
Thermal cut-out tripping
A thermostat protecting the magnetron shuts things down when it overheats. Usually a symptom of an airflow problem rather than a faulty thermostat.
Cooling fan failing
A weak or seized cooling fan lets the magnetron overheat within minutes. Fixing the fan fixes the shutdowns.
Blocked ventilation
Cabinet clearance, a dust-blocked intake grille or a saturated filter — the free version of this fault.
Failing magnetron drawing excessive current
A tube on its way out can overheat and trip protection before it dies outright.
Intermittent door interlock
A switch dropping out mid-cycle stops everything instantly, usually with the display still lit.
Repair or replace?
Check the free causes first — clearance around the unit, a clean intake grille and clean filters resolve a fair share of mid-cycle shutdowns. If the cooling fan or magnetron is genuinely at fault, apply the usual rule: repair over-the-range and built-in units, replace countertop ones.

Could it be the outlet rather than the microwave?
Occasionally. A microwave sharing a circuit with other heavy loads can trip a breaker mid-cycle. If the display goes completely dark rather than the unit simply stopping, check the breaker first.
